The pawns are made of plastic. A stick can be placed in the pawn both horizontally and vertically. The pawns can also be combined with hoops (which can be pushed on top of the pawn).

Cavaletti training

Cavaletti training is a great workout for dogs to find and keep balance, learn to adjust their stride length and to contract and relax muscles.

Learning

Line up a row of cavaletti (4-6) and let the dog walk over them in a smooth motion.

Attention: do not run or jump! This is not a racing exercise, it's about coordination and harmony. In the beginning, lead the dog in step over the cavaletti. If the dog goes too fast, place a treat on the ground between the obstacles, so that the dog slows down.

Once the dog has mastered walking over the cavaletti, the hurdles can be practiced at a trot. Note: If the dog is working on a leash, it should be slack during the exercise. The leash should not interfere with the dog.

Distance

Always make sure there is enough space between the cavaletti. Tailor the distance for each dog. The dog's backline should remain straight and relaxed as it walks over the cavaletti. If the dog has to arch its back when stepping over it, the obstacles are too close together.

As the starting distance between the cavaletti, use the distance between the dog's front and back legs, measured when the dog is standing, or calculate the distance as twice the animal's elbow height, the dog's height from the ground to his elbow.

Height
The height of the cavaletti should not exceed the heel height of the dog. So keep the hurdles low.

NB!

Stepping over a cavaletti, try it yourself a few times in a row, takes a lot of strength from a dog. Therefore, do not do this exercise too often in succession and slowly build up the degree of difficulty, for example placing the cavaletti a little further apart so that the dog has to extend its stride. Don't underestimate how tired you can get from 'simple' steps!
